OH MY GOSH THE FLICKR VIDEO QUALITY IS BAD… I hate for you to even see the teaser… see the hi-res vimeo here!

By now, I think you all know that I like experimenting and trying new ideas. I have created something here below — I don’t know what it is. It’s not photography; it’s not video; it’s not cold scientific slow-mo with bullets through apples; it’s something else. What do you think about it? Can you help me come up with a name for it in the comments below or by sending me a Tweet? I have entitled the piece "The Moments Between, Episode 1: Japan". Yes, that means there are more episodes coming… they take a lot of work to produce.

Is it "new photography"? I don’t know – I think some of this has been available to big movie studios with sophisticated special effects teams and the like. But this can now be done by the common man – it is inexpensive, understandable, and fun. Have ever wanted to capture something that is in between a photograph and a video? Some of those micro-monents that are important and wonderful?

How did I do it? I’ll reveal that in an upcoming video! I’m still perfecting the technique… so, just as I have done with the popular HDR Tutorial on the site, I will endeavor to put together a tutorial on "this", whatever the name might be.

You can also click this link to see the HDR Photos from Japan I have published thus far.

Very interesting, reminds me of the "Matrix" slow motion capture, except much more detailed in some ways, and very beautiful. I am interested to know what kind of camera (photo or video or both) that you use for this

Awesome, I like this and the original at your site!! These projects generate alot of work for sure.. some call this "filming" highspeed, but I would like to call it superslow or long moments perhaps.. well done!!!!

Your exactly right Ryan the famous "Matrix" shot was shot with a bunch of cameras set around 360 degrees at different angles.. All programmed to take a photograph a half second or so after the one before it took the picture..

wow, I love this– and yes, much better watching it on your web-site– such poor quality on Flickr.
It’s like Mindful Movement Photography– or Mindful MOments– I like the phrase Flow Photography, someone suggested on your webiste.
I teach mindfulness meditation, and we try to get people to practice by slowing down– like doing very slow walking– and then you start to notice more in the full bloom of the moment. It seems like you are accomplishing something like this, only visually. I’m amazed at how some of the people are in sink with their gestures and movements- and probably are not even aware of this– and one might not even see it, unless you looked at it in this slowed down way.
There is a book Blink, can’t remember the author– but he talks about looking in depth, at brief moments– moments you see go by in a Blink. You can tell much from them– for example, you can watch 20 seconds or so of a couple interacting, and predict with great accuracy who will have a good long term relationship, and who will end up divorced (that is you can tell this is you are an experienced marriage therapist like Gottman, and trained to look for these things). So that’s my free association to all of this. I eagerly await your video

Wow.. you are something else again (Richie Havens) an amazing person… rivaled only by ‘Mule Ferguson’ my brother-in-law who is also … simply one of this earths amazing people. Well done dear :)

fascinating – something like my dreams of printed photos that move, but this is more like movement that stands still.
    Slow moments…

    edited to add…

    Still motion

Very cool! And I very much look forward to learning more about this technique.

Pretty damn cool Trey! I’d definitely be interested in hearing more about exactly what we’re looking at.

    Thanks!

Man – this Flickr video quality is so bad… you can really see the difference from Vimeo. I had no idea the difference until I saw side by side. It’s almost like FLickr removed 2/3 of the frames!

    Thanks for the feedback

    Louise – that is interesting!

How about "SIC photography" or "SIC Video" for a name?

SIC=Stuck In Customs. SIC in literature, also means that a strange or incorrect scentence has been written intentionally or has been quoted verbatim.

    So I think it fits!

    intriguing, impressionistic !!!! I like it !!!!

Really like the video but don’t see what is so new about this. Slow Motion can be seen daily whenever you watch sports and it’s been used in many other occasions.

What might be new is the process you’ve used. I can imagine that the latest Nikon cameras and their movie mode is capable of this. Can’t wait to hear how you did this.

Seen on a rss aggregator. (?)

…. some day I would love to take you out for coffee and pick your brain for about an hour… more if I could…

Enjoyed this amazing video on your website last night. Love it and looking forward to more, also looking forward to tutorial…although no way can I duplicate this. Your moments in between is once again a way photography tells so much about life, makes you really see things that would have passed by w/out notice by most ppl.

It reminds me a lot of that show Heroes where the guy freezes time and walks around people frozen like this. Excellent job framing this and developing your process! I’m curious how you did this!

  37. svenskahr

    May 26th, 2012

very cool- I like the slo-mo effect a lot. Gives a lot of feeling to the video. I could see it being very attractive type of video for various marketing avenues. Well done!

seems a lot like ‘bullet time’, however, I am not sure how you did it with a single camera.

So rich and so alive! I think on my third time viewing it, I realized what it reminds me of — it has that 3d look of a video game. Amazing.

Impressionistic imagestreaming? I know I’m impressed!

  43. Mahesh Telkar

    May 27th, 2012

absolutely awesome Trey !!! It doesnt matter what you call it but extremely impressive .. I am just eagerly waiting for your next video demonstrating how you do this .. I really got couple of ideas to do this way ..

  44. LilyOmori

    May 27th, 2012

The real reason I love Japan can be found in all those subtle in between moments you have captured so artfullyI I like mojopete’s term for your technique: imagestreaming. Or how about a play on the words time-lapse and/or slow dance. Maybe time-dance imaging? : P Anyway, love your work!
